Background:The use of finasteride 1 mg/day has been associated with significant sexual side effects, including depression, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and decreased ejaculate volume.1
Finasteride 1 mg/day is a clinically indicated drug for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia) in patients with a receding hairline or balding on the top of the head.1
The pharmacokinetics of finasteride 1 mg/day were investigated in 598 men with male pattern hair loss and 579 men with normal hair growth. A single dose of finasteride 1 mg/day (0.25, 0.5, or 1 mg) was administered every 4 to 6 weeks to men with male pattern hair loss. Blood samples were drawn before (T0) and (Tmax) at the beginning of the first week, and at the end of the first week. The Tmax was determined using the Bio-Rad 129000 HPLC system. After administration of a single dose of 0.25, 0.5, or 1 mg finasteride 1 mg/day, serum levels of 5-bromo-6-deoxy-5-keto-α-DHT were measured using the AB serum assay. Pharmacokinetic analyses of finasteride 1 mg/day showed that the maximum observed dose was 1 mg (Tmax of 5-bromo-6-deoxy-5-keto-α-DHT, Tmax of 0.5-1.2 hours), and the mean steady-state plasma concentrations of 5-bromo-6-deoxy-5-keto-α-DHT were approximately 1 ng/mL (Tmax of 5-bromo-6-deoxy-5-keto-α-DHT, Tmax of 0.5-1.2 hours) and 1 ng/mL (Tmax of 0.5-1.2 hours) in men with normal or increased hair growth. A single dose of 1 mg finasteride 1 mg/day did not affect the bioavailability of 5-bromo-6-deoxy-5-keto-α-DHT in normal and male subjects with male pattern hair loss. Plasma 5-bromo-6-deoxy-5-keto-α-DHT concentrations were not significantly altered in men with male pattern hair loss or normal or increased hair growth.

The etiology of male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia) is multifactorial, with genetic factors that predispose patients to a receding hairline and genetic factors that influence hair growth.1 In general, male pattern hair loss is characterized by hair loss of the vertex (topical pattern) and the anterior mid-scalp area (transverse and subch themed).2 It is typically associated with a receding hairline in men with normal or increased hair growth and is generally accompanied by thinning of the hairline (i.e., beard or thinning hair).
Finasteride and Hair Loss are two types of treatment that work together to reduce hair loss in men and women. While Finasteride and Hair Loss work by inhibiting DHT (dihydrotestosterone), the medication works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that shrinks hair follicles in the scalp, and it is responsible for hair follicle miniaturization. DHT is a form of testosterone that causes follicles to shrink, resulting in thinner hairs and hair loss. Hair loss can be caused by several factors, including:
1. Menopause: DHT levels in the body drop when menopause occurs. This can affect hair follicles and even cause hair loss. Menopause is a common health condition that affects many men. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride can help prevent further hair loss and improve hair growth.
2. Depression: Depression can also cause hair loss. This can cause hair follicles to shrink and damage hair follicles.
3. Hormonal Changes: There is a link between hormonal changes and hair loss. Some people experience hair loss from menopause while they are experiencing menopause. However, hair loss can also occur in women during pregnancy and while they are using the medication. It is important to note that while this is an important aspect of treatment, it can also be a side effect of a medication. Therefore, it is important to discuss any hormonal changes with your healthcare provider before starting finasteride and to discuss any possible side effects that may occur.
Allergic Reactions: Some people may experience allergic reactions to finasteride or other medications they are taking. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
4. Depression: Finasteride can cause a decrease in mood, which can affect hair growth and increase hair loss. If you experience depression or anxiety while taking finasteride, stop taking the medication and contact your healthcare provider.
5. Scalp and Bursum: Finasteride can increase the risk of scalp and hair loss. If you have any concerns or side effects while taking finasteride, please discuss them with your healthcare provider. They will be able to advise you on whether it is appropriate to continue to use finasteride or if this could be a potential side effect of this medication.
6. Scalp And Bursum: Finasteride can cause a decrease in the size of the follicles that line the scalp and hair.
7. Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS): Finasteride can increase the risk of ovarian cancer.
8. Breast Tenderness: Finasteride can increase the risk of breast tenderness and enlargement while taking this medication. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking the medication and contact your healthcare provider.
9. Bone Loss: Finasteride may cause a decrease in bone mineral density.
10. Skin Irritation: Finasteride can increase the risk of developing a skin reaction when used in combination with other medications.
In conclusion, finasteride and hair loss work in very similar ways, and each type of treatment has specific benefits and considerations. Finasteride and Hair Loss can help prevent further hair loss and improve hair growth. However, there are also potential risks associated with using these medications, including the possibility of breast cancer, a rare but possible skin reaction, OHSS, and breast cancer. It is important to discuss any possible side effects with your healthcare provider before starting finasteride and to discuss any concerns or concerns with your doctor.

Hi there, I’m 30 years old and I have been in and out of the gym for 3 weeks. I’m 5’5”, 5’2” and 120 lbs. I’m still not too impressed with how much time I’ve been doing this exercise. Is it normal for me to be doing it once a week? Any advice?
I’m currently on Propecia and I am now using it every day, and that has been working well for me. I’m not seeing a difference in my hair growth, I’ve had hair loss in my head since taking Propecia, and it has helped a lot to make it much easier for me to continue doing it.
I’m not looking for a solution to my problem, but I’d like to be able to do it again. I’m on finasteride and I have been using it for about 4 months now.
I’ve also been on Propecia for a year now and have not noticed any side effects. I’m not sure if it’s causing it or just something that’s causing it. I’ve been taking it every day since I first started taking Propecia, and the only one that worked well was the one that stopped my hair loss.
I would also say that it is a good way to lose weight and maintain my weight if I’m not feeling stressed. I just hope to maintain it for the long term and that I don’t break it down. I am a big fan of the gym, and have been using it since I was 12 or 13.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
May 23, 2016, 4:13pm6Hi everyone
I’m 5’5” and 120 lbs, I am only 5’2” and I have been on finasteride for 4 years. My hair loss has been on and off for about a year now. I’m still on Propecia and use it every day for 3-4 months. I still see a change in my hair growth, I’m not noticing anything in the way of side effects like I was in before I started on finasteride. I’m now using Finasteride to treat my hair loss. I have had no side effects for a few months and have been on a low dose finasteride to stop it from happening again.
Thanks for your input!
